How to choose the best mobile technology for HR
The advancement of technology within any organisation is now inevitable. However, choosing the right technology can be a minefield – especially if you don’t work in the department affected. Honeydew have made the decision easier – here is our guide: How to choose the best mobile technology for HR.
Not so long ago, we wrote an article explaining that Technophobia is costing the UK economy billions of pounds every year in lost productivity, and that 80% of middle managers felt that they weren’t offered sufficient mobile technology to do their job outside of the office. These statistics alone are sufficient in prompting a change to newer technologies.
According to Workforce, the following 5 steps need to be thought about when choosing your new technology.
1) Don’t get in the way – encourage BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
Employees usually have far better technology that is personally owned, and that that they would rather use. Allowing employees to switch with ease from ‘work’ to ‘personal’ on one device will instantly drive productivity upwards. Enable the use of personal mobile phones and tablets instead of creating firewalls and policies to prevent this. Working remotely will instantly become clunky and unorganised if separation is enforced.
2) Work with IT, not against them
Although adding another opinion to the mix can seem like a pain, getting IT involved can actually make the process of deciding pain free. They can advise with ease on what technology is compatible with existing systems, which aren’t and how best to switch over.
3) Keep it simple
Although you may initially think that to work remotely, employees will need access to all data and information, this in untrue. On a day to day basis, your employees will only want to do a small number of tasks on their mobile devices and access to information should therefore be limited. Make sure there is open communication when deciding what information the access should be limited to.
4) Tasks or Information? Or both?
You need to think about whether your employees simply need to complete tasks while on their mobile device, or if they also need to access company information and data. Choose a platform that allows access to both or either. Don’t allow access to both if it’s not necessary.
5) Interface is everything
Choosing a technology that allows your employees to move seamlessly from one device to the next is essential. If you started a task on your phone, your signal cut out whilst on the underground and then you had to start all over again back at the office on your laptop, it would waste valuable time. Using these devices needs to feel like a continuous experience.
